Art Exhibition: Remembering Mom

Artist Statement

On March 3, 2016, my mother, Coliss Cousino, won the ultimate victory over cancer when she entered the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was not only an inspiration to me, but to many people, as she aimed to glorify God in everything she did and said. This exhibition is dedicated to her and includes pieces that touch on her faith, her humor, and her love for creation. Some pieces chronicle her journey in cancer. May each piece give a glimpse into who she was and even more, point to Christ.

Rachel Hinz took a preschool assessment test in Monroe, Michigan, in the mid-1980s and scored highest in the art section; her mother wrote on the test “Maybe she’ll be an artist.” Eventually, she majored in Art Education with a Painting Emphasis at Concordia University Ann Arbor and taught art in Little Rock, Arkansas. She returned to Michigan in 2008, married, and now resides in Ypsilanti where she attempts to paint when not coloring with her three children. Her work has been shown in Ann Arbor, Detroit, and three times in the international art competition “ArtPrize” held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
